some design work

Just been finishing off some designs for my uni portfolio, thought I'd share a few. They don't look too great on here but I've printed them on cream textured paper and used some lace on them too so they don't look as.. stark and white I guess. Might take some photos of some pages from my portfolio before it all had to be handed in on the 30th of April ohhhh gosh should really get back to doing it! The theme from the design brief is 'Feminine Romance' and these are a few from a 20 outfit collection for SS10/11. Let me know what you think x

(Not sure why they've come out so small)

le fabuleux destin d'amélie poulain

On Monday I'm off to Paris for 4 days! Can't wait. Obviously going to visit all the shops I can't afford YET. But what I really want to do is visit places from the film Amélie. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a watch. My hotel is about 30 seconds walk to the cafe she works at in the film.

Anyone have any tips on places to visit or things to do?

I feel I should comment on fashion but the only logical thing I can think of is stripy tops and berets. Although I have seen a lot of clothes on the highstreet with Eiffel Towers on and the word 'Paris' which i feel is just taking Parisienne fashion FAR too literally.

I will take some photos in Paris and post them on here when I get back. Au revoir!

taking all the credit

Something which annoys me GREATLY is when really good songs from the around 50s to early 90s get sampled on absolutely dire Top 40 song, and for the 15 minutes it's famous the dribbling masses think the manufactured 'pop sensations' created them. If you do one thing, listen to the intro of Straight To Hell by The Clash.

No pictures today as this is a purely audio rant blog. A prime example is 'Flo Rida' (What does that mean?? A pun on Florida??) using Dead or Alive. And upon a bit of research I found that the chorus of 'Low' has been sampled in its entirity from another song.

Actually found a good website whilst raging on this topic; WhoSampled. I urge you to browse for some of your favourite more recent artists or bands, and maybe find a new appreciation for their inspiration.

sonia rykiel for h&m revelation

OK so when I wrote that last blog I was trying to insult the range by referring to it as 'childrenswear'. HOWEVER it appears I was actually spot on?!

I'd love to know why you'd want to run the risk of turning up somewhere wearing the same outfit as a 3 year old. Maybe it's a future trend I didn't notice on the catwalks.

Absolutely.
Bizarre.

collaborations

I'd like to start by expressing my extreme hatred for the new Sonia Rykiel for H&M range. I quite liked the underwear from last season, the navy and black versions as well as the nude colours. They were... nice to look at but not really practical as underwear or outerwear (and I couldn't help but notice most of it is now in the sale section).

I simply haven't the words for what is to follow;

This is just a snippet of the childrenswear on offer from Sonia Rykiel at H&M. I'm particularly baffled by the last outfit, which looks like leisurewear from Matalan. Now there is nothing wrong with Matalan, but you don't see Matalan at Paris Fashion Week.

Sonia Rykiel is famed for her knitwear, I was disappointed with the selection, Thick stripes of clashing unattractive colours and Barbie pink with big cheap diamantes. Eurgh.

On a lighter note, popped in to Topshop for some feminine spring clothes as I promised myself, got these;

The picture doesn't do the first dress any justice, there are several horizontal straps across an open back, and the waist falls in the perfect place, really flattering and summery. I was a bit wary about the second one but thought I might as well go for cut out dress, and the style is really versatile, it can easily be dressed up with heels or jewellery, or dressed down with a belt and pumps. I also want some light denim shorts, but think it'll have to be a DIY job on my old Ralph Lauren jeans as none on the high street seem to fit my stumpy legs properly.

spring cleaning

Apologies for not updating this in a while, it may seem I am being lazy but in fact I spend a great deal of time researching trend predictions and catwalk shows for my uni work, might post some of my design projects when they are finished. But anyway, some of the spring/summer 2010 rtw I've come across have just been too lovely not to share. Firstly, I've always loved Luella, so cute and romantic. Which is odd as I don't dress that way at all. But I'm a sucker for bows and hearts, and the colour palette of this collection is just so versatile and fitting for spring;

So beautiful. But what do they look like on someone who isn't 6 foot and a size 6? I feel I really should start dressing more feminine for spring and summer but I just love the whole grunge/biker thing that went on for A/W; oversized check or denim shirts, with boots, studded leggings, and a leather jacket. Not all at once please.

fashion apps

Having recently got an iPhone and spent far too long searching through the app store, i thought I'd try and save some like minded people some time and make a list of what I consider to be the best fashion related applications. Some are quite useful particularly to fashion students, but still great for anyone with an interest in fashion or styling. And some are downright unnecessary. I can see the human race completely dependent on these things within a year.

Style.com
If you get one app, get this one. You can see hundreds of collections from pre-autumn 09, until spring/summer 2010, with ready to wear and couture shows, and is updated all the time.

trendstop trendtracker
Trend forecasting and analysis company, contains the dates and locations of hundreds of upcoming fashion shows.

The Sartorialist
The ultimate street style fashion blogger, mini version on your iPhone, how wonderful.

net-a-porter
I like to just add whatever I like to my basket and gasp and the order total at the end. Or 'Sort by price: High'

Chictopia
Mobile version of the great fashion site. Users upload photos of their outfits.

Chanel
All Chanel news, photos and details from all recent collections.

D&G
Pointless intro music. You can buy online (ha) and view the collections.

Zara
View collections and inspirations for women, men, and children.

Oasis
Look at any new pieces, find your nearest store via GPS (or something).

Warehouse
Similar to Oasis and Zara apps.

Karen Millen
Again, view and buy from the collection.

Fendi
Runway videos, lookbook, backstage previews, and a wallpaper for your iPhone.

Ralph Lauren
View Fall 09 or Spring 10 Collections.

Gucci
View looks, store locator, and Gucci news. And some sort of bizarre music making game?

Nylon
fashion, beauty and culture news

Paris Street Map
I'm going to Paris at the end of March so this will be useful, but you can get maps for practically anywhere.

In general I'm very impressed with the iPhone. I have the 16GB version, over 100 apps and I've only used about 5 % of the space?! Let me know if anyone has found any apps genuinley more useful than the Fast Food finder.
